About the role
VP of Engineering (Remote - US/Canada)
Reporting directly to the CTO, you will own the end-to-end product development roadmap and lead a ~15-person engineering team (with plans to double headcount by year’s end).
Responsibilities
- Strategic & architectural leadership: Own the engineering roadmap with the CTO and Product; make architecture decisions balancing speed, scalability, and quality.
- Technical decision-making: Evaluate build-vs-buy choices, manage technical debt, and drive realistic cross-functional planning with clear trade-offs.
- People leadership & scaling: Mentor team leads (platform, parsing, GenAI, front-end), scale the org through hiring and retention, and establish development processes and operational cadence.
- Hands-on engineering: About 40% IC—debug, prototype, review code, and solve complex cross-team problems.
- Performance & reliability: Drive end-to-end web performance analysis/optimization and partner with Infrastructure on deployments, production reliability, and performance.
- Community & influence: Engage with open-source communities and upstream changes where relevant.
- Cross-functional collaboration: Act as the connector between technical teams and translate customer pain into engineering priorities (with Customer Success/Sales).
Requirements
- 8+ years professional software engineering experience
- 3+ years engineering leadership experience; track record scaling teams of 15+ engineers across multiple functions
- Ability to own product roadmaps closely with CTO/executive leadership
- Deep hands-on expertise in Go, Rust, and/or Vue/TypeScript
- Strong background in developer tooling and/or DevOps infrastructure (or hardware-adjacent domains)
- Must be able to integrate AI/ML capabilities into existing product workflows
- Startup or scale-up experience (Series A/B strongly preferred)
- Not management-only: comfort with substantial hands-on contribution (~40%)
Nice to Have
- Hardware/electronics/CAD-adjacent domain experience
- Experience taking AI-powered features from prototype to production
- Open-source contributions in devtools or enginee
