Role Overview

VP Legal, Commercial (Reporting to the General Counsel)

StackAdapt is looking for a senior, business-minded in-house attorney to lead and scale its commercial legal function. You’ll build a high-performing team of commercial counsel, partner with revenue leadership to close commercial transactions, and drive contracting efficiency through automation and AI.

Responsibilities

Lead, mentor, and develop the commercial legal team (currently 3 commercial lawyer reports): set priorities and support growth
Build and scale the commercial legal function by designing efficient processes and expanding automated, self-serve contracting resources
Identify and champion automation/AI-enabled tooling to improve contracting speed, quality, and consistency and improve visibility across the contract lifecycle
Balance high-touch strategic enterprise deals with low-touch automated workflow pipelines
Set long-term department vision and oversee hiring and development
Partner with executive and senior leadership on commercial strategy, risk tolerance, and legal operations
Structure, negotiate, and draft a wide range of commercial agreements (including major customer and alliance agreements)
Provide commercial and legal guidance to key stakeholders
Deliver thought leadership internally and externally
Provide leadership, mentorship, and training to StackAdapters

Requirements

10+ years of relevant experience in-house or at a reputable firm (US experience preferred)
In-house experience in advertising, technology, ad tech, data, or media
Strong track record managing commercial/legal risks in digital media/ad tech while driving revenue impact
Solid foundation in commercial transactions, with deep understanding of IP issues and data licensing concepts
Proven experience managing, mentoring, and developing a team of lawyers
Ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders with urgency
Experience building/scaling a commercial legal function (process design, playbooks, templates) and willingness to adopt automation/AI in legal workflows
Strong ability to own projects end-to-end with strong follow-through
Excellent legal and business judgment, balancing legal risk and business strategy

Experience leveraging negotiation skills to influence revenue outcomes in ad tech/data environments
Demonstrated legal operations focus and adoption of contract lifecycle automation
