About the role

Role overview

You’re applying for an unpaid, home-based volunteer position as a Technology Officer (Data Scientist / DevOps / Full Stack). BCI is looking for volunteers who take a methodological approach, conduct independent research and analysis, and collaborate with stakeholders to advance the institute’s climate mission.

What you’ll do

  • Provide technical support for BCI working groups (e.g., renewable energy, carbon trading, forest monitoring, natural resource management, blockchain, AI)
  • Help build end-to-end, data-driven pipelines and projects (from domain/business understanding through to measurable insights)
  • Contribute across potential technical tracks, including:
    • Data Scientists: develop machine learning/statistical models
    • Data Engineers: ETL and data wrangling
    • DevOps: support hybrid infrastructure (cloud and on-prem)
    • Full Stack Developers: build web/mobile apps, APIs, and related components
  • Generate opportunities for strategic partnerships
  • Attend conferences/events to promote BCI and communicate research findings (e.g., PowerPoint decks)

Responsibilities

  • Support working groups with technical expertise across climate/tech domains
  • Communicate and present insights to internal/external stakeholders
  • Engage key stakeholders and help grow partnerships

Requirements / skills

  • Strong oral communication and stakeholder relationship-building skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to balance competing priorities under pressure
  • Technical strength with a detail-oriented approach (math and coding skills)
  • Strong presentation skills and persuasive communication
  • Motivation and willingness to learn both technology and domain knowledge needed for impactful climate action

Preferred qualifications

  • Programming proficiency in one or more languages (e.g., Python, Java/C#, JavaScript, R, Scala, Go)
  • Interest/knowledge in climate change, climate finance, blockchain, and AI
  • Relevant degree/training (preferred)
  • Experience in software development / technical aspects of data-driven systems
  • Proven ability with computing or math tasks in Agile technology projects
  • Portfolio of supported Open Source GitHub projects
  • Language aptitude: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish (desirable)

Notes

Volunteers may be appointed to a specific technical track (Data Scientist, DevOps, etc.) or as a generalist depending on interests and career development. More experienced volunteers may be appointed as Senior or Principal Technology Officer.
