About the role
Role Overview
Unpaid, home-based volunteer opportunity with the Blockchain & Climate Institute (BCI). You’ll serve as a Technology Officer with a technical focus such as Data Scientist, DevOps, or Full Stack, supporting end-to-end projects from domain understanding through to data-driven insights.
What You’ll Do
- Provide technical support to working groups across themes like renewable energy, carbon trading, forest monitoring, natural resource management, blockchain, and artificial intelligence
- Conduct independent research and analysis and apply a methodological approach
- Engage key stakeholders and build strategic partnerships to advance BCI’s mission
- Communicate results by presenting research findings (e.g., via PowerPoint decks) at conferences and events
- Help build a full technical pipeline that may include:
- Data Science / ML models
- Data engineering (ETL and data wrangling)
- DevOps for hybrid infrastructure (cloud and on-prem)
- Full stack development (web, mobile, APIs)
Responsibilities
- Technical support for members of BCI working groups (renewable energy, carbon trading, forestry, AI/blockchain, etc.)
- Generate opportunities for strategic partnerships
- Attend and promote BCI through conferences/events; present insights to stakeholders
Requirements
- Excellent oral communication and stakeholder relationship skills
- Strong organizational skills; ability to balance demands under pressure
- Strong technical skills with math and coding ability; detail-oriented
- Strong presentation skills to communicate ideas persuasively
- Mission-driven; willingness to learn both technology and climate/action domain needs
- Proficiency in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, Java/C#, JavaScript, R, Scala, Go)
- Relevant education/training is preferred; experience in software development or technical work on data-driven systems
- Proven ability working on Agile technology projects (computing/math-related tasks)
Nice to Have
- Portfolio of supported Open Source GitHub projects
- Aptitude in Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish
- Strong interest/knowledge in climate change, climate finance, blockchain, and AI
- Potential for Senior/Principal appointment for more experienced volunteers
