About the role
Role Overview
Full-time Remote Junior UI/UX Designer to support a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) project. You will apply Human-Centered Design (HCD) to create intuitive, accessible, and user-friendly applications for veterans and government stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Business Analysts, developers, and stakeholders to translate requirements into design solutions
- Create wireframes, mockups, and prototypes (primarily in Figma) to communicate design intent
- Translate complex workflows into accessible, user-friendly interfaces
- Contribute to and maintain design systems, UI patterns, and documentation
- Conduct user research and usability testing, then synthesize findings into actionable improvements
- Support accessibility audits and remediation, translating results into clear guidance
- Serve as a resource for accessibility guidance across teams (including developers and testers)
- Work in Agile teams with iterative feedback from stakeholders and developers
- Formulate research questions for indirect user discovery when direct access is limited
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Interaction Design, HCI, or related field
- 2+ years proven UI/UX design experience with a strong portfolio focused on user-centered and accessible design
- Strong understanding of Human-Centered Design (HCD)
- Experience designing interfaces that support Section 508 accessibility compliance
- Proficiency with Figma for design and prototyping
- Experience working in Agile environments with iterative feedback cycles
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with VA Digital Service guidelines and USWDS (U.S. Web Design System)
- Experience supporting federal/government projects (e.g., VA, DHA, HHS)
- Knowledge of design systems, design tokens, and scalable UI frameworks
- Experience with tools such as Axure, Miro, Mural, Jira, Confluence
