About the role
Role Overview
Full-time remote Junior UI/UX Designer supporting a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) project. You’ll apply Human-Centered Design (HCD) to create intuitive, accessible, and user-friendly applications in alignment with Section 508.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with business analysts, developers, and stakeholders to turn requirements into clear design solutions.
- Create wireframes, mockups, and prototypes (e.g., in Figma) to communicate design concepts.
- Translate complex workflows into accessible user interfaces.
- Contribute to and maintain design systems, UI patterns, and documentation.
- Conduct user research, usability testing, and data analysis to refine designs.
- Perform indirect user discovery when direct access is limited (e.g., crafting research-driven questions).
- Synthesize research into actionable UX improvements.
- Design and ensure interfaces comply with Section 508 accessibility standards and best practices.
- Support accessibility by serving as a resource to developers/testers and participating in accessibility testing, audits, and remediation.
- Work in Agile teams using iterative feedback to continuously improve designs.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Interaction Design, HCI, or a related field.
- 2+ years UI/UX design experience with a strong portfolio focused on user-centered and accessible design.
- Strong understanding of HCD (Human-Centered Design).
- Experience designing accessible interfaces supporting Section 508 compliance.
- Proficiency with Figma for design and prototyping.
- Experience working in Agile environments with iterative feedback.
- Ability to collaborate cross-functionally and translate user needs into design solutions.
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with VA Digital Service guidelines and the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS).
- Experience supporting federal/government projects (VA, DHA, HHS, etc.).
- Knowledge of design systems, design tokens, and scalable UI frameworks.
- Experience with tools such as Axure, Miro, Mural, Jira, or Confluence.
- Experience supporting accessibility audits, testing, or remediation efforts.
