About the role
Role Overview
UI/UX Designer / Frontend Developer to support the Enterprise Management & Control (EM&C) system for a mission-critical DoD Satellite Communications (SATCOM) Enterprise. The role is remote and focuses on driving user-centered design from concept through implementation in a secure DoD environment.
Responsibilities
- Design modern, responsive web interfaces for secure DoD applications.
- Conduct user research, stakeholder interviews, and usability testing to validate design decisions.
- Create wireframes, mockups, interactive prototypes, and high-fidelity UI designs.
- Collaborate with frontend engineers to translate designs into implementable components and maintain design consistency.
- Develop and maintain design systems, style guides, and component libraries aligned with security and accessibility standards.
- Ensure compliance with Section 508 / WCAG accessibility and DoD security constraints.
- Present designs to stakeholders and participate in Agile ceremonies (planning, reviews, demos).
- When needed, assist with implementing frontend components to match the design system.
Requirements
- U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a SECRET security clearance.
- 3+ years of UI/UX design experience for web applications or enterprise software.
- Strong end-to-end portfolio (problem framing, research insights, and final UI deliverables).
- Proficiency with modern design tools (Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, etc.).
- Understanding of responsive design and user-centered design methodologies.
- Experience working in Agile environments and with cross-functional teams.
- Proficiency with JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, and CSS.
- Excellent communication, storytelling, and interpersonal skills.
Preferences
- Experience with government/defense software, especially SATCOM or C2ISR platforms.
- Experience with HTML5/CSS3/TypeScript and integrating with RESTful APIs.
- Familiarity with development/management tools (Git/GitHub, Nexus, Eclipse).
- Experience with UI frameworks such as Vue3, Angular, or React.
- Knowledge of design systems (e.g., Material Design, Carbon Design System).
- Experience conducting usability testing and accessibility audits.
- Understanding of frontend development principles and constraints of secure web environments.
