Ubuntu Engineering Lead

Lead engineering teams within Canonical’s Ubuntu Engineering organization, focusing on quality, performance, and resilience. Canonical is hiring engineering leaders (manager and Senior+ roles) who stay technical and close to the code while developing strong, high-performing teams.

Role overview

Help elevate the Linux developer and user experience
Lead and develop software projects as well as the processes and people around them
Integrate fresh open source software, provide robust upgrade paths, and help engineer the future of Ubuntu

Responsibilities

Own your technical roadmap and be accountable for team outcomes
Lead, challenge, and develop engineers; coach, mentor, and provide technical feedback
Facilitate technical delivery and positively influence engineering culture
Design, build, and ship high-quality, high-performance software
Demonstrate sound engineering principles via architecture, development, and code reviews
Plan, estimate, and execute work with your team
Collaborate with product management to define Ubuntu vision and strategy
Set expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders
Engage with upstream and neighboring open source communities

Team areas (you may be matched to one)

Foundations: architectures, package managers, compilers/toolchains, bootloaders, filesystems, core utilities
Server: Ubuntu Server design, evolution, and future
Desktop: Ubuntu Desktop, Ubuntu Core Desktop, WSL, gaming technology, and modern desktop applications (Flutter)
Debcrafters: Ubuntu archive maintenance, health, and forward movement

Requirements

Technical leadership experience
Background in software engineering
Proven track record building, nurturing, and developing high-performing engineering teams

Nice-to-haves / focus areas

Strong Linux developer/user experience orientation
Experience designing and shipping software in Rust, Go, and Python
Architecture and code review experience
Familiarity working with product management and external stakeholders
