Store Construction Project Manager (REMOTE)
Designer Brands is hiring a Store Construction Project Manager to lead the end-to-end construction journey for stores across the country—turning design and drawings into brand-aligned customer experiences.
Role overview
Hands-on and fast-paced, this role manages projects from early drawings through final walk-through, coordinating contractors, vendors, timelines, budgets, and on-site quality.
Responsibilities
- Project leadership & planning
- Lead competitive bidding: contractor evaluation, selection, bid review/analysis, and award recommendations
- Review and validate construction drawings for accuracy, completeness, brand alignment, and scope consistency
- Perform construction administration tasks including:
- Responding to RFIs
- Reviewing/approving updates and submissions
- Coordinating materials and delivery schedules
- Maintaining accurate project timelines
- Reviewing/approving: pay applications, change orders, and budget adjustments/impacts
- On-site management & quality control
- Conduct site visits to assess build quality, milestone progress, and contractor performance
- Prepare and manage punch lists to ensure items are completed on time and correctly
- Oversee project close-out documentation and handoff
- Travel up to 30% to support construction across regions
- Communication & collaboration
- Maintain clear communication with internal partners, external contractors, vendors, and design teams
- Facilitate/participate in weekly construction and scheduling meetings
- Lead weekly project calls covering timeline, scope, and deliverables
- Provide proactive, solution-oriented updates including risk mitigation and recommendations
Requirements
- 1–2 years of experience as an Intern, Project Manager, or Project Engineer (recent construction management graduates may be considered)
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (construction management indicated; degree details are truncated in the posting)
- Strong skills in:
- Verbal/written communication across home office and field teams
- Organization and ability to manage multiple projects
- Financial acumen for budgets and tracking spend
- Technical proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings
- Quick, thoughtful problem-solving and escalation when needed
- Team collaboration and a leadership mindset
Nice-to-haves
- Prior experience in store/retail construction project environments (implied by store construction focus)
