Staff Technical Product Manager (Runtimes)

Role Overview

Fastly is hiring a Staff Technical Product Manager (Runtimes). You will own the strategy and roadmap for Fastly’s runtimes, including Compute and VCL, guiding how these runtimes converge, where they remain purpose-built, and which primitives they should share.

Key Responsibilities

• Define and drive runtime strategy and roadmap for Compute and VCL, including how they converge and differentiate.
• Improve Compute as a runtime and platform surface, ensuring it meets customer expectations for predictable limits and reliability.
• Expand the runtime surface by introducing new execution models and enabling native runtime workloads.
• Define how runtimes meet the AI era, and where runtime capabilities should evolve for modern workloads.

Requirements

• 8+ years in product management or technical product leadership, ideally in infrastructure, platform, or developer-facing products.
• Strong builder bias for shipping with the judgment to take well-reasoned positions on the runtime future.
• Ability to communicate effectively across levels: deep technical discussions with engineers and crisp strategic framing for executives and customers.
• Deep runtime/systems fluency, including execution environments such as runtimes, containers, isolation models, serverless/edge compute, and trade-offs between them.
• Demonstrated execution focus: comfortable owning outcomes in ambiguous, fast-moving conditions.
• Ability to form technical convictions, support them with evidence, and influence without authority.

Nice-to-Haves

• Hands-on background with runtime and isolation technologies, such as:
  • Container platforms
  • WebAssembly component model and WASI 0.3
  • Firecracker or comparable microVM and sandboxing stacks
  • Similar execution engines
• Startup or 0-to-1 experience shipping technical products in resource-constrained environments.
• Experience with edge compute, developer platforms, or runtime interoperability at scale.
