Role Overview

Join Instacart as a Staff Software Engineer (Web). You’ll shape the web platform architecture that powers discovery at scale, partnering with engineering, product, design, and machine learning teams.

Responsibilities

Define the web platform architecture for large-scale discovery, including decisions for:
- Rendering approaches
- Client-side data fetching and data retrieval
- Client performance and end-to-end system behavior
Build and deliver innovative web features that help customers discover new retailers and deepen engagement with existing ones.
Lead improvements to Core Web Vitals, page load performance, and overall frontend health.
Influence technical strategy across organizational boundaries and drive architectural decisions.
Lead engineering design reviews and help guide long-term frontend/web technical vision.
Design and operate large-scale web platforms supporting multiple product surfaces.
Mentor engineers and enable cross-team technical alignment.

Requirements

10+ years of software engineering experience with a focus on frontend
Experience building web systems used and maintained by large engineering orgs (30+ engineers)
Comfort with ambiguity, a bias toward action, and strong cross-team influence
Deep expertise in web performance optimization, including:
- Rendering considerations
- Core Web Vitals
- Bundle size
- Caching strategies
- Client-side data fetching
Strong communication skills and ability to influence technical strategy across teams
Experience with hybrid architectures and/or webview-based client systems and/or cross-platform web rendering
Senior/staff-level experience designing and operating web systems, including mentoring and long-term vision

Nice to Have

Experience with Search, Recommendations, Personalization, or related discovery platforms
Experience partnering with machine learning, product, and design teams
Experience building frontend platforms or design systems for multiple feature teams at scale
Understanding of the online grocery / marketplace / e-commerce ecosystem
