About the role

Role Overview

Staff Software Engineer on Stripe’s Merchant Experience team, responsible for shaping the next generation of how merchants interact with Stripe products. You will lead technical strategy, drive quality and performance improvements across core merchant surfaces (including the Stripe Dashboard), and help define AI-powered merchant experiences in an AI-native world.

Responsibilities

Define technical strategy for merchant-facing experiences across Stripe, emphasizing quality, performance, and AI integration into core workflows.
Lead design and delivery of complex cross-team projects that improve reliability, responsiveness, and UI polish.
Establish a quality-first engineering culture via standards, tooling, and processes for shipping high-quality, performant UI by default.
Own the technical approach to making the Dashboard and merchant tools best-in-class in speed and responsiveness, including instrumentation, performance budgets, and architectural improvements.
Innovate on future merchant UX, exploring and prototyping how AI can change how merchants discover, configure, and operate Stripe products.
Build platforms and abstractions (frameworks, components, and developer tools) that improve productivity and encode quality/performance best practices.
Partner with Product, Design, AI/ML, and Infrastructure to translate product vision into a technical roadmap.
Mentor and grow engineers, raising the technical bar and fostering craftsmanship.

Requirements

Senior Staff scope, typically involving oversight of 4–6 teams and ownership of a portfolio of products.
10–15+ years of experience (expected) building and shipping complex, user-facing web applications at large scale (hundreds of thousands of users) and/or contributions by hundreds of engineers.
Track record leading large-scale, cross-functional engineering projects with broad organizational impact.
