Staff Software Engineer

Role overview

Join Steno as a Staff Software Engineer to drive hands-on development, architect technical solutions, and mentor non-staff engineers. You’ll help establish strong engineering practices and contribute to a product-oriented culture of continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

• Participate actively in software development, applying expertise to architect, design, and implement technical solutions.
• Own and maintain software architecture, building and refining team processes and engineering best practices.
• Mentor and coach non-staff engineers, helping grow Steno’s developer community and representing the company externally.
• Collaborate on solving product and engineering problems, including working with sometimes incomplete designs/specs.

Requirements

• At least 6 years of software development experience.
• Deep understanding of web app fundamentals across the stack (from UI/pixels to data/queries).
• Strong familiarity with Steno’s stack:
  • Node.js with TypeScript
  • React.js front-end
  • PostgreSQL
• Extensive experience with Git, software patterns, best practices, and writing strong SQL.
• Experience with relational database design and software architectures (e.g., n-tier, monolithic, distributed).
• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure and cloud-based CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience with unit and integration testing.
• Bachelor’s in computer science or equivalent experience.
