About the role
Role Overview
Staff Software Engineer (Full Stack) — senior technical leader and trusted individual contributor with high autonomy. You will set technical direction across projects, influence engineering decisions, and partner with stakeholders to deliver high-quality software.
Responsibilities
- Plan and execute technical roadmaps for new initiatives with minimal oversight
- Participate in strategic planning with customers, partners, and internal stakeholders
- Break down complex, ambiguous product problems into actionable technical solutions
- Reduce technical debt via documentation, refactoring, and automated testing
- Communicate architecture, technical decisions, project history, and tradeoffs for demos, proposals, and customer engagements
- Support hiring by participating in technical interviews and evaluating candidates
- Present technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Champion engineering best practices and drive improvements across teams
- Occasionally travel to collaborate and present to clients/partners
Requirements
- B.S. degree with 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, or 10+ years experience without a degree
- Expert-level experience building applications with Ruby on Rails
- Strong experience designing and developing RESTful APIs
- Experience with React, Redux, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS
- Experience responding to and triaging production issues
- Expert-level knowledge in at least one area (frontend, backend, or infrastructure) with ability to independently lead technical initiatives
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Public Trust security clearance
