Role overview

Staff Software Engineer (Front-End) at Emerald Cloud Lab (ECL). You’ll help build and evolve the ECL Command Center and internal web applications used throughout research workflows. As an early team member in a small engineering group, you’ll drive ownership, lead projects, and work closely with the Design team to strengthen UX and frontend capabilities.

What you’ll work on

Develop the Command Center experience for designing experiments, tracking progress, and analyzing results
Build and maintain frontend interfaces such as:
- The notebook interface for Emerald’s Symbolic Lab Language (SLL)
- Team-based features for managing research projects and end-to-end workflows
- Point-and-click command builders that help users access SLL capabilities
- Desktop web application support (web tech running across Windows/Mac)
Contribute to and strengthen engineering practices (e.g., process improvements for performance and delivery)
Actively select appropriate tools/technologies and ramp up quickly to learn them

Responsibilities

Lead feature development with strong focus on frontend UX
Provide technical leadership and ownership in a fast-paced environment with frequent releases
Partner closely with creative teams (especially Design) to deliver user-friendly interfaces
Improve engineering practices and reduce unnecessary complexity (“cut cruft”) while emphasizing performance multipliers (e.g., CI and Agile)

Requirements

10+ years of experience in website development
Demonstrated technical leadership experience
BS and/or graduate degree in computer science (or equivalent experience)
Proficiency in JavaScript and/or TypeScript
Familiarity with React and Redux (or equivalent frameworks)

Preferred qualifications

Willingness to push the bounds of client-side web development to create unique user experiences
Experience with Electron
Strong analytical and strategic problem-solving in a fast-paced environment
Strong written communication and documentation skills
Experience working closely with design/creative teams
Testing framework experience (e.g., Cypress, Percy, Storybook, Chromatic)
Attention to detail and a drive to deliver beautiful, friendly UI interactions
