Staff Software Engineer (FoodStorm)

Role Overview

Join Instacart as a Staff Software Engineer on the FoodStorm team. You’ll help modernize the on-demand ordering, catering, and prepared food platform by rearchitecting the system using a service-oriented architecture (SOA) approach.

Key Missions

• Contribute to the rearchitecture of the FoodStorm platform with an emphasis on scalability and maintainability via service-oriented architecture.
• Implement high-quality software solutions to enable seamless integration between FoodStorm and Instacart systems.
• Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and designers to ensure alignment on the technical strategy and delivery.

Responsibilities

• Take strong ownership of deliverables and drive high-quality outcomes.
• Solve complex technical problems in a collaborative environment.
• Work closely with cross-functional teams, including an international engineering team in Australia.
• Provide technical mentorship to peers.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience designing, building, and maintaining scalable systems and distributed architectures.
• Proven ability to solve complex technical problems collaboratively.
• Proficiency in a modern programming language such as Python, Java, C#, or similar.
• Strong hands-on backend development and system integration experience.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills, including experience working across time zones (with ~2-hour overlap with Australia).
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent experience.

Nice to Have

• Familiarity with .NET Core, SOA patterns, and API integrations.
• Experience with front-end web development.
• Experience in system modernization or large-scale migrations (e.g., monolith to SOA).
• Knowledge of grocery retail, catering, or enterprise platform technologies.
