About the role

Role Overview

Join EnergyHub’s Data and Partner Platform team as a Staff Software Engineer. You’ll lead architectural decisions, mentor engineers, and build reliable, scalable systems with significant impact on energy technology.

Key Missions

  • Architect and implement scalable systems for ingesting, processing, observing, and maintaining billions of data points, with focus on performance, accuracy, security, and compliance across the full lifecycle.
  • Lead schema and data flow architecture, working collaboratively in an inclusive process.
  • Design and build integrations with partner and third-party APIs.
  • Mentor and develop engineers across the team and broader organization.

Responsibilities

  • Drive staff-level architectural decisions and system design.
  • Build and evolve distributed systems and microservices.
  • Ensure operational excellence through observability, incident response, and on-call readiness.
  • Produce clear written artifacts such as design docs, data model references, and runbooks.
  • Partner with product, operations, and business teams to deliver platform outcomes.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of professional software engineering with demonstrated staff-level scope.
  • Strong proficiency in gRPC/protobuf, RESTful APIs, and contract-driven development across multi-repository service meshes.
  • Deep understanding of OLAP vs OLTP and hands-on experience planning/implementing high-performance data processes.
  • Full-stack engineering background: scaling distributed systems and designing well-architected microservices.
  • Experience integrating complex partner/third-party APIs and building/maintaining file-driven data pipelines.
  • Strong testing discipline (unit, integration, TDD, and end-to-end).
  • Support-adjacent experience (e.g., on-call, triage, customer-facing resolution).
  • Proactive observability practices and the ability to lead high-severity multi-system investigations.
  • Thoughtful use of AI/LLM tooling to improve efficiency without over-reliance.
  • Evidence of working in regulated industries with compliance and data privacy requirements.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication; high autonomy with technical vision.
  • Warm, collaborative mindset; invested in helping others succeed.

Nice to Have

  • Prior energy industry experience (e.g., utility programs, demand response, DER management, wholesale energy markets).
  • Background building internal developer tooling/platform/shared infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with data quality monitoring and observability tooling.

Notable Technologies Mentioned

  • gRPC/protobuf, REST
  • React, TypeScript, Java, Spring Boot, Python
  • AWS, S3, SNS/SQS, RabbitMQ
  • Airflow, Docker
