About the role
Role overview
As a Staff Software Engineer at Pantheon, you will shape the architecture and development of a real-time collaborative web platform. You’ll work across the full stack and partner with product and design to turn ambiguous problems into concrete technical strategies and delivery plans.
Responsibilities
- Design and own the architecture of a real-time content platform, including:
- data models
- sync protocols
- API surface
- client-side state management
- Build backend services for collaborative editing, conflict resolution, and content delivery, ensuring reliability at scale on distributed cloud infrastructure.
- Collaborate with product and design as a technical partner by:
- translating tradeoffs into product-ready plans
- producing crisp design docs
- delivering phased execution strategies
Requirements
- 10+ years of overall software engineering experience with strong end-to-end ownership.
- Full-stack capability, shipping production systems on both:
- backend (APIs, data services, cloud infrastructure)
- frontend (interactive UIs, component systems, browser performance)
- Ability to reason about distributed state management and create a low-latency browser editing experience.
- Clear communicator: explain complex technical tradeoffs, write design docs, and improve teammates through high-quality feedback.
- Systems thinking with deliberate tradeoff-making to avoid future debt.
- Cloud-native fluency (GCP/AWS/Azure/Cloudflare), including containerization and modern CI/CD/deployment pipelines.
- Experience with real-time or collaborative systems (e.g., content editing, multiplayer, event-driven architectures, live sync).
- Deep frontend architecture skills: component modeling, state management, rendering performance, and browser platform knowledge.
- API design expertise, including when to use REST, GraphQL, and event-driven interfaces.
Nice to haves
- Experience with visual or low-code editing (page builders, WYSIWYG, drag-and-drop component systems).
- Familiarity with CMS architectures (headless/hybrid/traditional) and real-world tradeoffs.
- Contributions to open-source in web platform or developer tooling.
- Experience building developer-facing platforms/extensions (SDKs, plugin APIs, CLI tooling).
