Role: Staff Software Engineer

Staff Software Engineers at Code for America contribute to high-impact government services by supporting critical workflows, improving reliability, and advancing automation. You’ll be involved across the product lifecycle—from prototyping and design to building features based on user feedback and operating systems at scale.

Responsibilities

Specialty Engineering (SME)

• Act as a Subject Matter Expert in a defined technology domain.
• Own technical decisions and documentation for implementation and architecture in your SME area.
• Create developer-facing documentation, best-practice guidelines, and learning/reference materials (examples, prototypes).
• Facilitate strategy and roadmapping conversations in your area.
• Partner with engineering leaders to help teams upskill.

Product Engineering

• Build features that help users navigate government services and get a dignified experience.
• Write automated tests and develop monitoring strategies to ensure service quality.
• Implement minimal viable features to learn quickly, then harden and scale when proven.
• Strengthen the culture of documentation for internal and external audiences.

Mentorship

• Mentor and collaborate with other software engineers in your area of expertise.

Requirements

• Significant experience building and maintaining componentized browser applications.
• Experience with design systems.
• Some full-stack experience, with deep focus on impactful browser-based applications.
• Ability to work with complex data and software architecture.

Experience

• 6+ years of full-stack experience (minimum stated).

Location / Work Model

• Remote position.
• Must reside full-time within the United States.
• Expected travel: no more than 10%.
