About the role
Role: Staff Software Engineer, Cloud Foundations (Staff)
You’ll join GitHub’s Cloud Foundations team to lead the technical direction of foundational cloud compute infrastructure that many internal teams depend on. The team owns and operates the platform systems behind GitHub’s internal VM platform, fleet lifecycle automation, configuration management, base OS and container image pipelines, and fleet inventory/discovery layer—while evolving these capabilities as GitHub moves to Azure.
Responsibilities
- Lead technical decision-making and architecture across Cloud Foundations (compute lifecycle, configuration management, infra orchestration, fleet inventory)
- Design and implement scalable, reliable, high-performance systems for problems like:
- fleet-wide reboot orchestration
- immutable image pipelines
- multi-region state management
- service discovery at scale
- Define and build “Azure paved paths” (event-driven compute and cloud-native patterns)
- Drive platform evolution from data center services to Azure-native equivalents
- Write, review, and maintain code primarily in Go and partner on language/tooling choices
- Mentor engineers through architecture guidance, code review, and design feedback
- Participate in on-call rotations, lead incident response on hard issues, and drive follow-up work to prevent repeats
Requirements
- 9+ years of software engineering (or related discipline) with proven production delivery experience
- Experience maintaining and delivering production software in languages including Go (and potentially C/C++/C#/Java/JavaScript/Ruby/Rust/Python)
Nice to have (implied)
- Strong experience building infrastructure/platform systems with a focus on safety, reliability, and reducing operational toil
- Ability to thrive in a distributed/remote, asynchronous environment with strong written communication
- Experience with compute lifecycle, configuration management, orchestration, fleet automation, and service discovery
