About the role

Role Overview

Staff Software Engineer, Client Architecture (Content Ecosystem / Composers) at Reddit. You will lead a multi-year architectural overhaul of Reddit’s post and comment composers across web and mobile, defining the technical vision for how users create content (with special focus on video creation/editing).

Responsibilities

Architect for scale: Define and execute an org-wide client architecture strategy for seamless video creation, editing, and uploading within shared composer experiences.
Accelerate product roadmap: Build and scale new contribution formats natively across the shared post/comment experiences.
Reduce friction & enable creation: Remove client-side friction and set standards for client performance to convert passive users into active contributors.
Mentorship & org leadership: Serve as a technical anchor for the Contribution engineering team; translate product requirements into actionable technical roadmaps and align execution across Web, iOS, and Android.
Leverage modern tooling (including AI): Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate prototyping and system design, while maintaining rigorous validation and ownership of final outputs.
Optimize the contribution funnel: Lead engineering of high-performance client infrastructure, including:
- Zero-latency rich-text rendering
- Resilient, edge-optimized media upload pipelines
- Offline/online editing state synchronization

Requirements

10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with proven experience as a Senior Staff Engineer or Principal Engineer on consumer-facing web and/or mobile client applications.
Client architecture expertise: Strong modern web architecture skills (e.g., React, TypeScript, advanced state management) plus deep command of native mobile paradigms (iOS/Swift and Android/Kotlin) to define unified client APIs and cross-platform standards.
Domain expertise: Track record solving hard client-side performance/rendering bottlenecks at scale and building interactive systems such as:
- zero-latency rich-text editors
- asynchronous media processing pipelines
- real-time state synchronization (especially across offline/online)

Nice to Haves

Experience building or productizing new content formats, including video creation/editing and low-effort/viral creation experiences.
