Role overview

Staff Software Engineer (Backend) working full-remote to drive development of critical backend systems that support product engineering.

Develop backend systems spanning platforms, infrastructure, APIs, databases, and data pipelines.
Improve performance, scalability, and reliability by optimizing data storage and retrieval.
Establish strong engineering best practices and balance engineering priorities with business needs.
Identify innovative approaches to deliver exceptional value to users.

Responsibilities

Own backend components end-to-end from early on.
Contribute to system design, API design, and backend platform engineering.
Design data architectures and schemas; support database scaling and complex query optimization.
Work with batch and/or streaming data pipelines.
Ensure data integrity, efficiency, and (for SaaS) data isolation, scalability, and robust security.

Requirements

7+ years of software engineering experience with a backend/platform/system programming focus.
Strong computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, computational complexity).
Deep understanding of data architecture/data modeling.
Knowledge of API design and backend development best practices.
Experience with system design and designing/building multi-tenant SaaS platforms.
Experience with relational databases in production and complex query performance.
Proficiency in Python and its ecosystem.
Experience with cloud providers in production (AWS, Azure, GCP, etc.).
Experience with engineering communication (explain technical issues to non-technical audiences).

Nice-to-haves

Experience with Logic/Relational Programming (e.g., Prolog, Minikanren, Datalog).
Experience with batch or streaming data pipelines.
Experience with platform engineering and IaC tools (e.g., Terraform, Pulumi, AWS CDK).
Experience with Mathematical Optimization (e.g., route planning, supply chain optimization, scheduling).
Experience with design patterns.
Experience with Control Systems Engineering (industrial automation, robotics, avionics systems).
