About the role
Role Overview
Staff Software Engineer, Backend — Platform (FinHub Tooling)
Coinbase’s FinHub Tooling team powers an internal platform that gives Engineering, Customer Experience, Risk, and Compliance teams operational visibility into billions of dollars in daily fund movements across crypto, fiat, and internal wallets. As a Staff Software Engineer, you’ll own the technical strategy and architecture for the platform, with an emphasis on high-volume, high-reliability systems and an AI-first approach to internal tooling.
What You’ll Do
- Own technical strategy, architecture, and quarterly roadmap for the FinHub Tooling platform.
- Make key system design decisions across reliability, performance, and scalability.
- Drive an AI-first internal tooling approach: identify AI-powered workflows, replace manual processes with intelligent automation, and measure impact.
- Build high-reliability systems including:
- search
- admin workflows
- bulk remediation
- observability across core financial entities
- Lead cross-functional alignment with Product, Payments, and senior leadership to turn ambiguous, high-impact initiatives into scoped technical roadmaps.
- Improve engineering quality by:
- defining engineering processes
- leading design reviews
- mentoring engineers on architecture patterns and coding standards.
Required Skills & Experience
- 8+ years of software engineering experience delivering fault-tolerant, highly reliable systems at scale.
- Proven ownership of technical strategy and roadmap for a platform/service/team, including architectural trade-offs with major organizational impact.
- Ability to drive execution on complex, ambiguous initiatives across multiple teams and stakeholders.
- Track record of elevating team technical quality through mentorship, design reviews, and process improvements.
- Experience architecting internal tooling/admin platforms/operational systems serving multiple user groups with competing requirements.
- Responsible use of generative AI with human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and measurable workflow, cost, and quality improvements.
Additional Notes
- Coinbase is remote-first, but not remote-only; expect quarterly in-person “surges” for working sessions.
