About the role

Role Overview

Staff Software Engineer (Android) in SpotOn’s Hospitality group. You will act as a technical leader and hands-on Staff IC for the Android-native POS and handheld applications, shaping how they’re built and ensuring they support complex hospitality workflows at scale.

Responsibilities

Technical Strategy & Architecture: Define and drive a multi-year architectural roadmap for Android applications.
Offline-first & Sync Reliability: Ensure offline-first capabilities and real-time data syncing are reliable, scalable, and continuously improving.
Cross-Functional Technical Leadership: Lead high-impact initiatives across multiple squads, such as:
- Modularizing the codebase
- Optimizing local data persistence (Room/SQLite)
- Overhauling the UI layer with Jetpack Compose
Reliability at Scale: Own stability and performance for a 24/7 commercial-kitchen environment.
Mentorship & Standards: Mentor Senior/Mid engineers; set expectations for code quality, documentation, and automated testing.
Partner with Product & Engineering: Evaluate feasibility, shape roadmap decisions, and align technical investments with customer/business outcomes.
Developer Productivity: Improve CI/CD, automated testing, failure analysis, and use AI-assisted engineering responsibly.

Requirements

10+ years professional software engineering experience, including significant Android experience at scale.
Proven capability at Staff Engineer scope or equivalent technical leadership.
Strong Kotlin expertise, including coroutines, Flow, and structured concurrency.
Experience modernizing or interoperating with legacy Android architectures (e.g., RxJava).
Experience designing and evolving large multi-module Android applications.
Solid grasp of Android architectural patterns such as MVVM, MVI, and Clean Architecture.
Experience with offline-first workflows, synchronization, and complex local data management.
Ability to diagnose performance and reliability issues across app/OS/hardware/network boundaries.
