Role overview
SpotOn is hiring a Staff Software Engineer (Android) in its Hospitality group. This is a hands-on Staff IC role where you’ll lead technical direction for Android-native POS and handheld applications, focusing on resilient performance and complex hospitality workflows.
Responsibilities
- Technical strategy & architecture: Define and drive a multi-year architecture roadmap for SpotOn’s Android apps, ensuring offline-first reliability and robust real-time syncing as the product scales.
- Lead cross-functional technical initiatives: Drive high-impact projects across multiple squads, such as:
- Modularizing the codebase
- Optimizing local data persistence (Room/SQLite)
- Overhauling the UI layer with Jetpack Compose
- Reliability at scale: Own stability and performance for a 24/7 hospitality suite, designing resilient systems for high-pressure commercial kitchen environments.
- Mentor & level up: Mentor Senior and Mid-level engineers; set standards for code quality, documentation, and automated testing.
- Partner across product & engineering: Collaborate with Product, Design, and leadership to evaluate feasibility and align technical investment with customer/business outcomes.
- Improve developer productivity: Work with enablement teams to enhance CI/CD, automated testing, failure analysis, and appropriate use of AI-assisted engineering tools.
Required qualifications
- 10+ years professional software engineering experience, including significant Android experience at scale
- Demonstrated Staff Engineer-level scope or equivalent technical leadership
- Deep Kotlin expertise, including coroutines, Flow, and structured concurrency
- Experience modernizing or integrating with legacy Android architectures (e.g., RxJava)
- Proven experience evolving large multi-module Android applications
- Strong knowledge of Android architecture patterns such as MVVM, MVI, Clean Architecture (or similar)
- Experience with offline-first workflows, local data management, synchronization, and/or high-volume real-time data flows
- Ability to debug complex performance/reliability issues across app, OS, hardware, and network boundaries
