Staff Machine Learning Engineer (Platform-Identity)

Role Overview

Join Coinbase as a Staff Machine Learning Engineer on the Identity Verification (IDV) team. You will lead the ML systems that assess the legitimacy of individuals, documents, and capture sessions, and you’ll own the end-to-end IDV machine learning stack.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical strategy for IDV ML end-to-end: from architecture and design through production enforcement.
• Own the full IDV ML stack, including:
  • Document authenticity models
  • 1:1 and 1:N face matching
  • Liveness detection
  • Presentation-attack detection (PAD)
  • Deepfake / injection detection
• Build identity-graph systems to support verification and account integrity.
• Develop behavioral and device-intelligence models.
• Drive vendor ML strategy by benchmarking external models against a Coinbase-owned evaluation set and designing dynamic routing logic across providers and geographies.
• Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership across teams.
• Protect the integrity of millions of accounts through robust ML enforcement.

Requirements

• Expert-level Python with production experience using TensorFlow or PyTorch, including:
  • Model training
  • Evaluation
  • Serving/infrastructure
• Proven ability to translate KYC/AML requirements and fraud trends into ML roadmaps, and communicate trade-offs to Product, Compliance, Risk, and Security stakeholders.
• Domain experience in identity verification or biometrics, with deep applied ML in at least two areas:
  • Computer vision/biometrics
  • GNNs
  • Sequence models
  • NLP/LLMs
• Experience deploying production ML systems at scale and owning cross-team ML architecture end-to-end.
• 8+ years deploying production ML systems at scale; demonstrated technical leadership.

• Experience using generative AI responsibly with human oversight to deliver measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
