Staff GenAI Backend Engineer

Role Overview

Join Airbnb as a Staff GenAI Backend Engineer. You will lead the Automation Platform, a large-scale conversational AI platform, and work closely with AI/ML engineering teams to improve workflow and backend performance.

Responsibilities

• Lead development and optimization of Airbnb’s Automation Platform (conversational AI).
• Drive the technical vision and strategy for workflow and backend optimization.
• Collaborate cross-functionally to enhance AI prompt effectiveness.
• Participate in the full development lifecycle: technical design through deployment.
• Contribute to code and design reviews.
• Optimize system availability, performance, and scalability.

Requirements

• Strong background in backend systems with focus on quality, efficiency, and resilience.
• Expertise with RAG patterns, memory routing, and agent planning.
• Experience integrating LLMs with APIs, vector databases, and an orchestration framework.
• Ability to design and iterate on prompt engineering for LLM/AI-driven scenarios.
• 9+ years of software development in service-oriented architectures and backend development.
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills across teams and domains.
• Passion for Agile development, system optimization, and improving team productivity.
• Experience with workflow optimization and scalable, flexible backend architecture.

Nice-to-Haves

• Bachelor’s and/or Master’s/Ph.D. in Computer Science (or equivalent practical experience).
