Staff Frontend Engineer

Role Overview

As a Staff Frontend Engineer on Medium’s ML & Insights team, you will own the product surfaces where Medium’s machine-learning algorithms meet readers. This is a high-impact individual contributor role and the team’s sole web engineer, driving end-to-end ML product experiences at large scale.

Responsibilities

• Own end-to-end implementation of ML-powered product surfaces (e.g., For You Feed, tag/topic pages, and story page features)
• Partner with Data Scientists and ML Engineers to translate model outputs into growth experiments and new product experiences
• Wire experiments, feature flags, and A/B tests to validate hypotheses and drive measurable growth
• Stay hands-on in the codebase: deliver high-quality frontend code and set frontend engineering standards
• Improve web architecture, engineering standards, and development patterns across the org
• Provide technical leadership across teams through architecture guidance, implementation approach, and execution support
• Maintain and improve product experimentation tooling across Medium
• Enhance performance, reliability, and maintainability of the web platform
• Mentor engineers via technical guidance, code reviews, and design discussions
• Identify and solve the most impactful technical challenges across the web stack
• Attend twice-yearly in-person offsites in the U.S.

Requirements

• 7+ years building complex, scalable frontend systems and features
• Deep proficiency in React and TypeScript
• Comfortable owning features end-to-end, including API integrations and backend-facing layers
• Product-minded with strong focus on UX/UI polish and user delight
• Experience wiring experiments and feature flags, with understanding of designing experiments to produce meaningful signal
• Comfortable working alongside ML systems (ability to reason about model outputs and constraints)

• Experience specifically integrating ML outputs into user-facing product experiences and experimentation pipelines
