Staff Developer - Bizapps

Role overview

Staff Software Developer for the BizApps Commerce Team at 8x8. You will build and operate the billing infrastructure powering the company’s commercial engine, working across Product, Finance, and Platform engineering.

This is a full-stack backend-leaning role with meaningful ownership from day one.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Product, Design, Operations, Infrastructure) to deliver reliable billing platform experiences
• Architect and develop scalable backend services and APIs across the billing ecosystem, including:
  • subscription lifecycle management
  • usage aggregation
  • payment processing
  • billing event processing
  • customer hierarchy modeling
  • tax and payment integrations
• Lead complex technical efforts end-to-end (requirements decomposition → design → implementation → production rollout)
• Provide technical guidance and architectural direction; establish engineering standards for:
  • code quality
  • testing
  • observability
• Own reliability, scalability, and performance of critical billing components; proactively address bottlenecks, regressions, and integration failures
• Drive technical design for new platform capabilities such as usage-based billing and billing reconciliation pipelines
• Develop deep end-to-end ownership of one or more core billing domains; be the team’s escalation point when systems are unclear or broken

Key qualifications

• 14+ years experience designing and developing scalable, enterprise-grade backend systems (ideally billing/commerce/financial platforms)
• Degree in Computer Science (or closely related field)
• Deep expertise in Java (primary); Python or other modern languages a plus
• Proven experience architecting, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems in production

• Experience with billing/commerce domains and financial platform engineering
• Comfort working autonomously in a distributed, fast-paced environment
