Staff Data Scientist (Quora)

Role Overview

Join Quora as a Staff Data Scientist within a highly empowered data team that shapes product and company strategy. You will partner with cross-functional teams to define metrics, run experiments, and solve complex data problems.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with cross-functional partners to devise measurements and metrics.
• Design randomized controlled experiments and evaluate outcomes.
• Tackle ambiguous, high-impact problem spaces across product and business (from question framing to analysis and implementation).
• Build visualizations and develop data-driven solutions.
• Mentor and guide other data scientists; raise team standards via best practices and process improvements.
• Own workstreams requiring deep ownership and effective cross-team leadership.

Requirements

• 7+ years in analytical/quantitative roles, including 5+ years as a Data Scientist (or similar), with senior/staff-level scope and autonomy.
• Strong programming ability in a procedural language such as Python or R, comfortable in production codebases.
• Proven mentoring experience and ability to improve team practices.
• Strong judgment combining quantitative rigor with product intuition.
• Ability to translate ambiguous business needs into analytical questions.
• Ability to explain technical results to executives and cross-functional partners.
• Expertise in statistical methods including regression, hypothesis testing, and causal inference.
• 2+ years evaluating recommender systems using both offline analysis and online experiments.
• Experience setting technical direction/strategy for a team or major workstream.
• Experience with large datasets and distributed computing (e.g., Presto/Trino).
• Active Quora user with strong curiosity about the product.
