About the role
Role Overview
Join Headway as a Staff Data Scientist (Growth), serving as the senior analytical and strategic leader for marketing performance and incremental growth. You’ll partner with Growth Marketing leadership and channel owners, as well as Finance, Product, and Engineering, to answer questions around incrementality, investment strategy, performance drivers, and scaling proven initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Build frameworks, analyses, and modeling approaches that help the marketing team move faster with confidence.
- Own incrementality measurement across channels.
- Build and maintain a trusted marketing measurement system.
- Diagnose performance changes and evolve modeling approaches.
- Partner with Engineering on measurement “plumbing”.
- Improve event instrumentation, identity resolution assumptions, and offline conversion integration.
- Monitor data quality and design scalable learning loops.
- Influence overall growth strategy and mentor analysts and data scientists.
Key Missions (as stated)
- Design and analyze geographic tests, control tests, impact tests, and quasi-experimental approaches when randomized tests aren’t feasible.
- Develop modeling approaches that create leverage (practical predictive/measurement models).
- Build practical models such as LTV forecasting and retention forecasting.
Requirements
- Excellent communication: explain complex measurement logic clearly to non-technical partners and surface uncertainty.
- High ownership and strong judgment: prioritize decisions that matter, move quickly, and manage risk.
- Practical marketing/growth modeling experience:
- Cohorting, forecasting, LTV estimation
- Saturation/diminishing returns
- MMM (Marketing Mix Modeling) concepts
- Calibration and monitoring
- Strong SQL plus strong proficiency in Python or R to build reliable, reusable workflows.
- Deep causal inference and incrementality expertise in real-world marketing systems; understand failure modes (e.g., selection bias, cannibalization, platform noise, attribution myths).
- 10+ years using data science/analytics/experimentation to drive marketing or growth decisions (or equivalent scope/impact).
- Track record influencing executive decisions with clear, measurable outcomes.
- Experience measuring acquisition quality beyond conversion (e.g., downstream engagement, retention, matching/quality, unit economics).
- Familiarity with lifecycle marketing measurement (incrementality, uplift, experimentation design for messaging).
- Experience partnering with Finance on budget allocation, payback, and scenario planning.
- Comfortable working with imperfect identity, privacy constraints, and evolving attribution ecosystems.
Nice-to-Haves / Additional Signals
- Experience with geo experiments, marketplace constraints, or capacity-aware marketing optimization.
- Experience designing incrementality measurement when randomized experiments are not feasible.
