About the role

Role overview

Join Hopper as a Staff Backend Software Engineer (Full Remote). You’ll use AI to build and ship features quickly in a low-process environment with senior engineers. You’ll drive decisions and own features end-to-end, with a strong emphasis on scalable backend systems and product-focused engineering.

Key missions

Improve the codebase to enhance efficiency for both humans and AI agents.
Architect scalable solutions and foundational patterns to launch new partner experiences efficiently.
Collaborate across teams using asynchronous feedback, while giving and receiving feedback to drive decisions and growth.

Responsibilities / what you’ll do

Direct AI agents and automated workflows to build and maintain complex systems, including knowing when to intervene.
Deliver results by rapidly onboarding to and contributing in unknown codebases.
Clearly explain not only solutions, but also the rationale and tradeoffs.
Design guardrails and feedback loops that keep AI-assisted development productive and reliable.
Apply product thinking by grounding quality and architecture in the customer experience.

Requirements

Mastery-level willingness to learn and/or experience with distributed system development in Scala.
Ability to design and implement guardrails/feedback loops for reliable AI-assisted development.
Strong communication and product-oriented architectural judgment (quality anchored in customer experience).
Experience working with AI automation/agents to build and maintain complex systems.

Nice-to-haves

Experience building scalable backend patterns for partner-facing experiences.
Demonstrated comfort in a low-process, high-ownership environment.
