About the role

Role overview

Join Hopper as a Staff Backend Software Engineer. You’ll use AI to build and ship features at high velocity in a low-process environment with senior engineers. You will drive decisions and own features end-to-end, contributing to both scalable backend foundations and the reliability of AI-assisted development.

Key missions

Improve the codebase to enhance efficiency for both humans and AI agents
Architect scalable solutions and establish foundational patterns for launching new partner experiences
Collaborate across a diverse team, providing/receiving feedback and making decisions asynchronously

Responsibilities

Direct and manage AI agents and automated workflows that build and maintain complex systems
Define and implement guardrails and feedback loops to keep AI-assisted development productive and reliable
Explore and deliver in unfamiliar codebases, iterating quickly and responsibly
Communicate solutions with reasoning, including tradeoffs and “why” behind architectural choices

Requirements

Mastery-level willingness to learn or experience with distributed systems development in Scala
Ability to fearlessly dive into unknown codebases and deliver results fast
Strong product thinking: quality and architecture tied to the customer experience
Experience designing guardrails/feedback loops for AI-assisted development

Nice-to-haves

Experience building systems where AI agents collaborate with engineering workflows
Experience working with or adopting scalable cloud services and modern frontend-adjacent stack components
