Staff Backend Software Engineer

Role overview

Join Hopper as a Staff Backend Software Engineer (full remote). You’ll leverage AI to build and ship product features at pace, working with a small group of senior engineers in an asynchronous, decision-driven environment.

Key missions

• Identify and execute codebase improvements to enhance efficiency for both humans and AI agents.
• Architect scalable solutions and foundational patterns to launch new partner experiences efficiently.
• Collaborate with a diverse team through feedback loops, and drive decisions asynchronously.

Responsibilities

• Own backend features end-to-end.
• Architect systems for scalability and long-term maintainability.
• Design guardrails and feedback loops that keep AI-assisted development productive and reliable.
• Direct AI agents/automated workflows to build and maintain complex systems, stepping in when needed.

Requirements

• Strong product thinking: quality and architecture anchored in customer experience.
• Experience designing guardrails and feedback loops for AI-assisted development.
• Ability to quickly dive into unknown codebases and deliver results.
• Clear communication of how you’ll solve problems, why, and the tradeoffs.
• Mastery-level willingness to learn distributed systems in Scala.
• Experience directing AI agents and automation, with judgment on when to intervene.

• Demonstrated experience with scalable distributed systems and AI-enabled development workflows.
