About the role

Role overview

Join Zapier as a Staff Backend Engineer (Revenue). You will own the technical vision and long-term architecture for Zapier’s Revenue Zone—defining pricing primitives, service boundaries, and data models to enable rapid pricing and packaging changes. You’ll collaborate cross-functionally (Product, Engineering, Finance, Sales) and mentor engineers while improving developer experience and documentation.

Key missions

  • Define and evolve the architectural direction for the Revenue Zone, balancing short-term delivery with long-term durability.
  • Lead high-impact technical initiatives to evolve Zapier’s monetization platform.
  • Partner with Pricing & Packaging, Product, and Design to drive ARR growth and intuitive monetization experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Ship measurable improvements in large, production systems at scale.
  • Make tradeoffs explicit; use data to guide decisions.
  • Guide API/platform evolution without breaking integrations.
  • Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks (profiling, caching, database optimization).
  • Lead end-to-end technical initiatives across multiple teams: gather requirements, surface risks early, align stakeholders, and deliver outcomes.
  • Mentor engineers and raise engineering standards through durable foundations and improved documentation/DEX.

Requirements

  • Strong engineering impact in complex production systems (many candidates have 8+ years, but the focus is on outcomes and capability).
  • Billing/payments/monetization domain expertise: metered billing, pricing models, entitlements, revenue recognition; understanding cross-functional impact (sales, finance, support, product).
  • API, platform, and performance expertise:
    • Designed and built APIs serving multiple consumers (internal teams, external partners, user-facing products).
    • Proven track record improving performance with measurable results.
  • Outcome-driven, customer-focused mindset; willing to rethink/pivot based on customer and business needs.
  • Cross-team leadership and proactive ownership on ambiguous, high-impact problems.
  • AI fluency: use AI coding tools routinely; understand where human judgment is essential—especially for revenue logic in high-correctness domains (payments/billing).
  • Comfort with complexity: can navigate and leverage mature codebases (including monoliths) without needing a clean slate.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience specifically supporting enterprise customers in billing and monetization operations.
