About the role

Role overview

Join Hostaway as a Staff Backend Engineer (PHP / Go) to build and evolve backend services that integrate vacation rental properties with major booking platforms. You will collaborate with the Product Manager to shape technical solutions and continuously improve engineering practices, while mentoring engineers and leading within your domain.

Responsibilities

Own and drive technical maturity for your domain, including architectural challenges and solutions.
Work closely with the Product Manager to understand business problems and propose appropriate technical solutions.
Lead and support the team, mentoring especially junior engineers through best practices and code reviews.
Build and maintain backend capabilities supporting partner integrations and SaaS workflows.

Requirements

6+ years of experience in SaaS backend development, including 2+ years in a leadership role.
Strong experience designing and developing RESTful web APIs.
Expert-level backend proficiency with a strong willingness to go deep in PHP + Go.
Strong testing skills: Unit Tests and Integration Tests (e.g., Jest or similar).
Strong understanding of relational databases (e.g., MySQL or PostgreSQL).
Experience transitioning toward event-driven / service-oriented architectures using Domain-Driven Design (DDD) principles.
C1 English level.

Nice-to-haves

AWS and experience with AWS managed services.
Experience with message queues (e.g., AWS SQS).
Experience with cloud-native apps.
Experience with NoSQL databases (e.g., DynamoDB or MongoDB).
Applied, coached, and mentored Extreme Programming (XP) / Agile practices.
Front-end experience with React and micro-frontends.
Knowledge of containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and DevSecOps practices.
