Staff Backend Engineer

Role Overview

Join Grafana Labs as a Staff Backend Engineer to help deliver profiling solutions for both on-premises and cloud environments at scale. You’ll partner with clients and the Grafana Cloud teams, lead projects end-to-end, and help design and maintain core systems.

Key Missions

• Collaborate with backend teams to deliver profiling solutions for on-prem and cloud.
• Lead projects from concept to implementation, including ongoing customer support and shaping the product roadmap.
• Design, build, operate, and maintain essential systems with a focus on reliability, performance, and availability.
• Support and mentor team members.

Responsibilities (Implied)

• Take an active role in translating requirements into modular MVPs and iterative improvements.
• Use operational experience to participate in reliability/operations activities.

Requirements

• Experience with on-call responsibilities and operations/SRE practices, including infrastructure as code (IaC) concepts.
• Solid experience with distributed systems.
• Strong ability to break down complex problems into modular solutions with short feedback loops (analyze → design → build → iterate).
• Experience designing/developing software that runs in the Cloud or relevant systems engineering background.
• Some experience delivering projects from requirements gathering through shipping to customers in a self-driven way.
• Demonstrated communication and collaboration skills in a fully remote setup.
• Clean, robust, maintainable, high-performance software engineering.
• Strong programming experience (the team uses Go, but Python/C/C++/Rust or similar is relevant).

Nice to Have

• Experience with Kubernetes.
• Experience working with Grafana and Prometheus in operational roles (including on-call) or through homelab/projects.
• Exposure to microservices architecture.
• Database backend experience.
