Staff Backend Engineer

Role overview

Join Grafana Labs as a Staff Backend Engineer in the Session Replay squad. You’ll help shape a new Grafana Cloud product that connects frontend signals to session-level evidence, enabling faster investigation of production issues.

Responsibilities

• Drive the end-to-end technical direction for Session Replay, covering frontend, backend, and data systems.
• Contribute to the evolution of the backend architecture, including designing systems using columnar/analytics storage for large-scale session data.
• Own product direction and architectural evolution; guide technical decisions from design through delivery.
• Collaborate with teams across Grafana to build consistent experiences across products.

Requirements

• Passion for working with data and delivering seamless customer experiences.
• Strong understanding of user-centered software development and ability to connect user context/goals to the right solution.
• Ability to reason about data-intensive systems: ingestion, storage, querying, and cost trade-offs.
• Comfortable owning features in ambiguous problem spaces; able to work independently in a small, remote team.
• Experience with data-heavy systems including privacy, security, and access control.
• Experience with performance-sensitive systems (large datasets, real-time queries, session data).
• Clear communication of design decisions in written and spoken English.
• Collaborative working style operating by consensus.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience building debugging or developer-focused tools.
• Familiarity with observability tools (e.g., Grafana, Datadog, New Relic, Sentry).
• Experience with columnar/analytical databases.

Tech & environment

• Core stack: Golang, TypeScript, React.
• Remote-first environment.
