Staff Backend Engineer (AI Systems)

Role Overview

Join MURAL as a Staff Backend Engineer (AI Systems) to design and build the core AI systems and platforms that power the next wave of AI-driven collaboration experiences.

Key Missions

• Design and build the core AI platforms enabling agentic, AI-driven collaboration.
• Build backend capabilities for MURAL’s agent platform, including:
  • Agent orchestration
  • Durable execution / long-running workflow execution
  • Contextual memory
  • Tool integration
  • Observability and evaluation infrastructure
• Translate open-ended product needs into clear backend architectures, service boundaries, data models, and implementation plans.
• Contribute to the technical direction for agentic AI and support team growth through hiring and process improvements.

Profile / Requirements

• 7+ years of software engineering experience building and operating reliable production systems, scalable services and APIs, and strong system architectures.
• Familiarity with AI / LLM / agentic systems, including concepts like:
  • tool use
  • context retrieval
  • evaluation
  • model orchestration
• Experience with knowledge graphs and graph-based data modeling, including:
  • entity resolution
  • relationship-aware retrieval
• Deeper AI/ML experience, especially around:
  • LLM evaluation
  • experimentation
  • embeddings
  • retrieval systems
• Strong production engineering focus: observability, reliability, testing, security, maintainability, incident response.
• Experience with distributed systems for complex workflows (orchestration, async processing, retries, event-driven architectures, job execution, failure recovery).
• Strong communication skills and cross-functional collaboration; able to produce clear technical documentation.
• Experience working full-stack or closely collaborating with frontend teams.
