Role overview

As a Staff Artificial Intelligence Engineer at Fieldguide (full remote), you will shape the technical direction of the company’s intelligence layer. You’ll define the architecture, standards, and roadmap for AI agents, lead the evolution of Fieldguide’s LLM infrastructure, and drive impact across engineering.

Key missions

Define and lead the technical direction of Fieldguide’s agent systems and intelligence layer.
Design and drive the evolution of LLM infrastructure, including models, prompts, guardrails, and feedback loops.
Partner with engineering leadership, product, and design to shape the company’s AI roadmap.
Own complex product areas, including agent orchestration and retrieval systems.
Create reusable platforms and tooling and identify/develop the next generation of senior engineers.

Responsibilities

Build and evolve agent orchestration and RAG/retrieval capabilities.
Lead end-to-end technical ownership across advanced AI/ML systems.
Influence technical direction across multiple teams and product areas.
Establish evaluation infrastructure and reliability standards for AI systems.
Contribute to human-in-the-loop design, ensuring the right level of automation.

Requirements

Deep expertise in TypeScript, Python, and distributed system design.
8+ years shipping production software, including 3+ years leading complex AI/ML systems.
Proven track record shipping LLM-powered products at enterprise scale.
Strong understanding of audits/evaluation: feedback structures, nuanced judgment, and reliability.
Experience with technical direction and organizational influence.

Nice-to-haves

Hands-on experience with cutting-edge LLM APIs/agent frameworks (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, LangGraph).
Mastery of retrieval architectures, RAG, vector databases, and embedding pipelines.
Experience with explainability and building trustworthy AI outputs.
Mentoring senior engineers and growing engineering culture.
Experience navigating compliance and enterprise rigor.
