About the role
Role Overview
Greenlight is seeking a Staff Android Systems Engineer to lead development of Android-based products running on custom hardware. You will own the application layer end-to-end while working closely with the Android OS, collaborating with hardware vendors, and shaping AOSP integration.
Responsibilities
- Develop Android apps that leverage AOSP-level capabilities, navigating framework code as needed.
- Collaborate directly with ROM and vendor teams, translating application-layer needs to platform capabilities.
- Add and enhance functionality in the Greenlight Android mobile app.
- Design and expose system services, Binder/IPC interfaces, and AIDL-based APIs for secure, reliable inter-process communication.
- Own the permissions, signing, and app identity model, including differences between standard and privileged/system apps.
- Drive PackageManager and app installation strategy, including silent installs, self-updating apps, rollback, and verification.
- Champion WebView as a first-class surface, owning native/web boundary concerns (JS bridges, performance, security, hybrid debugging).
- Build and maintain Android CI/CD pipelines, including device-in-the-loop testing, self-hosted runners, multi-module builds, multiple signing configurations, and automated deploys to real hardware.
- Design and extend device telemetry, health signaling, and heartbeat systems with battery/bandwidth/privacy tradeoffs.
- Increase reliability by adding observability, addressing long-tail failures, and improving production readiness.
- Build field debugging infrastructure: log pipelines, crash capture without Firebase, remote bug reports, and on-device diagnostics.
- Serve as the technical bridge between platform architecture and product engineering pain points; mentor peers in a distributed environment.
- Translate technical findings into business-relevant insights for engineering, QA, and leadership.
- Apply AI tooling to engineering problems in development, diagnostics, and platform automation.
Requirements
- BS in Computer Science (or equivalent).
- 8–12 years of software engineering experience, with substantial depth in Android platform/systems engineering.
- AOSP fluency (navigated source tree; worked with OEM/vendor teams).
- Deep understanding of Android security model, including sandboxing, system app privileges, and privileged IPC threat surface.
- Hands-on experience with update mechanisms from application-level to system-level.
