Staff AI Engineer (2nd Horizon)

Role overview

As a Staff AI Engineer at Grafana Labs, you’ll join the skunkworks initiative to design, develop, test, and ship AI-powered features. The work focuses on managing large datasets and helping users retrieve and find information via LLM- or agent-powered workflows.

Key missions

• Design, develop, test, and ship AI-powered features for large-scale dataset management and information retrieval.
• Own high-performance AI features that help users discover, organize, and optimize access to large datasets.
• Run a highly iterative process: quickly prototype, test, validate with real users, and continuously improve LLM- or agent-driven workflows.

Responsibilities

• Take ownership of engineering outcomes and drive projects forward in ambiguous spaces.
• Collaborate closely with the team, communicate clearly, and ensure solutions are innovative, scalable, and aligned with real user workflows.
• Utilize AI tools effectively to deliver production-quality, user-facing capabilities.

Requirements

• Strong AI software engineering background and solid software engineering fundamentals.
• Mindset for quick iteration and experimentation, balanced with a focus on shipping and scaling.
• Practical AI experience delivering solutions that work in the real world (not just in theory).
• Experience with LLMs, context engineering, and GenAI application development.
• Exposure to cloud-native environments such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Proven track record delivering software into production and used by real users.
• Ability to work with ambiguity, define scope, and make UI design decisions with minimal supervision.
• Experience using observability tools to understand and troubleshoot system behavior.
• Experience with agent frameworks or multi-agent workflows.
• Experience as a data analyst or working with data platforms (e.g., Looker, Tableau, PowerBI, Snowflake, Databricks).
• Experience building tools for data engineering.

Nice to have

• Prior work building tools that combine data engineering and GenAI/LLM workflows for end users.
