Sr. Platform Engineer

Role Overview

Senior Platform Engineer at Hims & Hers, building a developer platform (“paved road”) for product teams and driving adoption at scale. The platform includes AI-native tooling such as agentic service catalogs and MCP-backed APIs, plus golden paths and guardrails for safe AI agent deployment.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and extend developer platform foundations
  • Keep Backstage-based service templating healthy for new (greenfield) use cases.
• Build and scale an AI-enriched service catalog
  • Create and evolve a YAML-backed registry exposed via REST API and MCP, queryable by engineers and agentic systems.
• Develop “agent golden paths”
  • Evolve agent infrastructure from experiments to standard architecture.
  • Treat AI agents as first-class platform users by defining deployment standards and guardrails.
• Drive service mesh adoption
  • Lead rollout and standardization of Istio across the fleet (mTLS, traffic shaping, policy enforcement).
  • Produce runbooks and golden paths to simplify adoption.
• Implement platform guardrails
  • Define scorecards/insights and CI policies (linting, contract checks, security baselines) to help teams reach “green.”
• Own core platform components
  • Design, build, and operate Kubernetes, IaC (Terraform), CI/CD pipelines, service templates, runtime add-ons, and shared libraries with SLOs and runbooks.
• Partner with product teams
  • Work with rotating squads to co-design golden paths, remove friction, and measure adoption/impact.
• Lead migrations and deprecations
  • Execute multi-repo changes with clear communications, documentation, and safe rollout strategies.
• Measure what matters
  • Instrument developer experience and delivery metrics; use data to prioritize and iterate the platform roadmap.

Requirements

• 5+ years as a DevOps, SRE, Software, or Platform Engineer building and operating services/tooling.
• Bachelor’s degree in CS/Engineering or equivalent experience.
• Production experience with Backstage (or similar developer portal), service catalogs, and software templates.
• Deep experience with cloud + containers (AWS, Kubernetes, Istio) plus Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform or similar) and CI/CD.
• Strong coding skills in TypeScript/JavaScript, Go, Java, or Python; familiarity with multi-repo change management.
• Product mindset: empathy for developers, desire for feedback, workflow simplification, and bias toward adoption.
