Sr Manager, Software Engineering

Role Overview

Senior Software Engineering Manager (hands-on, player-coach) responsible for designing, developing, and delivering core software platforms for a pet insurance company. You will lead engineers while staying actively involved in architecture, code reviews, cloud design, and DevOps practices in a complex, regulated environment.

Main Responsibilities

• Hands-on technical leadership
  • Lead solution design, architectural decisions, and technical problem solving
  • Provide technical oversight via code reviews/design reviews
  • Lead production incident response and technical troubleshooting
• Team leadership & execution
  • Lead and mentor multiple software developers/senior engineers
  • Set technical and delivery expectations for engineering quality, ownership, and accountability
  • Balance delivery speed with sustainable team practices
  • Coach and conduct 1:1s, performance management, and development planning
• Application & platform ownership
  • Oversee and enhance:
    • Customer Portal
    • Partner Portal
    • Marketing and Purchasing Website
    • Partner API
    • Mobile applications
  • Ensure platforms are secure, scalable, resilient, and aligned with insurance business needs
  • Drive modernization while managing technical debt and platform stability
  • Deliver prioritized projects aligned with company goals
• DevOps, CI/CD & engineering standards
  • Improve CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps and Azure Pipelines
  • Champion automation, testing strategies, deployment consistency, and environment management
  • Define/enforce engineering standards (coding, testing & quality, cloud & security patterns, DevOps workflows)
• Agile delivery & stakeholder collaboration
  • Partner with Product, Policy, Claims, and Operations to translate business needs into technical solutions
  • Participate in sprint planning, backlog refinement, and delivery execution using ADO
  • Communicate technical tradeoffs, risks, and timelines

Requirements

• Hands-on technical credibility in:
  • .NET MVC + Razor (backend and frontend)
  • Azure Cloud
  • Google Tag Manager
  • Enterprise platforms
• Experience leading software teams (not a pure people manager role)
• Ability to operate at speed in a complex, regulated environment
• Knowledge of modern frontend development (SPA frameworks and modern UI patterns)
• Mobile applications experience
• CMS experience (Contentful preferred)
• Strong DevOps/CI-CD practices and engineering standards ownership
