About the role
Role Overview
Senior Tax Accountant (Motor Fuel) to join the tax organization. You will manage motor fuel tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions, support audits, and improve tax processes and operational efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Prepare, review, and file motor fuel tax returns in multiple jurisdictions
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local motor fuel tax regulations
- Maintain tax calendars and meet all filing deadlines accurately and timely
- Research and interpret changes in motor fuel tax laws and regulations
- Reconcile tax accounts and investigate discrepancies, variances, and filing issues
- Analyze tax data and prepare supporting schedules and documentation
- Respond to tax notices and assist with regulatory inquiries
- Support federal, state, and local tax audits by gathering documentation and preparing responses
- Identify opportunities to improve tax processes, controls, and compliance procedures
- Collaborate with Accounting, Finance, Operations, and other business partners to improve reporting accuracy
- Assist with automation initiatives and tax technology improvements
- Develop and maintain process documentation, internal controls, and best practices
- Participate in special projects and strategic tax initiatives as assigned
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or related field
- 3+ years of motor fuel tax experience
- Experience preparing and filing motor fuel tax returns
- Strong knowledge of motor fuel tax regulations and compliance requirements
- Experience with multi-jurisdictional tax filings and reporting
- Understanding of indirect tax processes and compliance controls
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Self-starter able to work independently in a remote environment
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA or CPA candidate
- Experience supporting tax audits and regulatory examinations
- Experience with process improvement, automation, or tax technology initiatives
- Experience in a large corporate tax environment
- Knowledge of excise tax and other indirect tax regulations
