Software Engineering Manager

Role Overview

Join Function as a Software Engineering Manager to lead and grow the engineering team. You’ll set technical direction, drive project execution, and build a culture of innovation while aligning engineering outcomes with product, design, and operations.

Key Missions / Responsibilities

• Recruit, mentor, and develop world-class engineers; foster collaboration, ownership, and continuous learning
• Define technical vision with focus on scalability, performance, and security
• Guide the team to make strong architectural decisions and maintain technical excellence
• Drive execution of key initiatives from conception through delivery, aligned to Function’s strategy
• Build engineering process excellence balancing speed with quality
• Lead effectively in a distributed/remote environment across time zones

Requirements

• 12+ years of software engineering experience
• 3+ years in a formal leadership/management role
• Proven success hiring, coaching, and scaling high-performing teams (startup experience preferred)
• Python proficiency and experience with large-scale distributed systems
• Knowledge of cloud and infrastructure, including AWS and/or Google Cloud
• Containerization experience with Docker and Kubernetes
• Experience with Agile, test-driven development, and CI/CD
• Ability to engage in deep technical discussions and drive architectural quality

Nice to Haves

• Data Engineering background (processing/analyzing large datasets to drive decisions)
• Frontend/mobile experience: React and React Native
• Machine learning deployment experience (deploying ML services, AI-driven personalization)
• Familiarity with health/wellness technologies (e.g., Oura, Whoop, Apple Watch, CGMs)
• Experience as an early engineering hire or founder (startup leadership background)
