About the role

Role overview

Join the Aviation team as a Software Engineering Manager to lead a fully remote backend team. You’ll help build remotely piloted aircraft and supporting ground systems for public safety customers, while driving architectural discussions and delivering impactful features.

Key missions

Develop a deep understanding of the Aviation team mission and the Flock Aerodome product
Identify technical bottlenecks and submit clear recommendations for improvement, collaborating with the Director of Engineering
Execute and resolve prioritized bottlenecks to improve:
- engineering efficiency
- communication
- delivery pipelines
Build strong relationships with team members and help shape team culture

Responsibilities

Lead backend engineering efforts, including architectural and technical strategy discussions
Deliver features and influence the roadmap through technical decision-making
Manage people: coach direct reports, drive performance, and support career growth
Partner with Product Management to review specifications, clarify requirements, and align priorities
Use agile processes and ceremonies to ensure planning-to-delivery success

Requirements

Strong technical leadership experience, including:
- contributing to architectural discussions
- defining technical strategy
- understanding backend intricacies, especially Ruby on Rails
Excellent communication and proactive asynchronous support for a fully remote team
Proven people management skills (coaching, performance, career development)
Project management capability: lead initiatives from planning through delivery and meet milestones/timelines
Strong collaboration with Product Management in an agile environment

Nice-to-haves / additional skills

Proficiency in Rust
Experience with TypeScript + ReactJS
Ability to conduct thorough code reviews and set high engineering standards
Experience handling ambiguous problems by creating structure and driving solutions
