Software Engineering Manager (Player-Coach) at Flock Safety (full remote). Lead a software team building and maintaining internal tools, web services, and monitoring platforms for a live device network, while staying hands-on in the codebase.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor software engineers; support career growth and provide constructive feedback.
  • Drive technical strategy and roadmap planning for device monitoring, alerting, and internal health tools.
  • Design microservices architecture and manage dependencies.
  • Manage sprint execution and foster high-performing team dynamics.
  • Build full-stack features using TypeScript, Node.js, and React (dashboards, web services, robust APIs).
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to solve high-visibility, mission-critical scaling problems.

Requirements

  • Strong hands-on coding ability with TypeScript/Node.js for backend web services and React for modern frontend.
  • Solid SQL database experience.
  • Hands-on cloud experience with AWS services (including S3, API Gateway, SQS).
  • Experience with container orchestration: Docker, Kubernetes, Helm.
  • Strategic approach to microservices design and planning under uncertainty.
  • Proven experience leading/managing/mentoring engineers focused on team growth.
  • Comfort using modern AI-assisted engineering tools to improve velocity and development output.
