About the role
Role overview
Spool AI is looking for an early-career Software Engineer (Voice Systems) to help own and evolve its voice and phone systems. This is a hands-on role focused on production systems used by real users, not a narrowly scoped “tickets only” position.
Responsibilities
- Take primary ownership of major parts of Spool’s call pipeline and voice experience
- Maintain, improve, debug, and extend systems in the critical path of user outcomes
- Work on voice agent reliability and conversational quality
- Implement and improve call routing, transfers, and interruption handling
- Build and maintain telephony integrations and tooling
- Create and use internal dashboards and debugging systems
- Improve latency, observability, and production monitoring
- Develop prompting and orchestration logic for voice interactions
- Handle real-world phone system edge cases, including IVRs
- Support experimentation infrastructure and quality measurement
- Think beyond a narrow role boundary; focus on whether solutions truly solve the problem
Mentorship & growth
- Work closely with engineers and operators, with direct access to senior technical and product leadership
- Gain broad exposure to startup execution (product strategy, experimentation, infrastructure, fundraising, hiring, growth, brand)

Requirements
- 0–3 years of software engineering experience
- Comfortable in at least one programming language
- Strong logical reasoning and ability to solve difficult engineering problems
- Deep care for user experience
- Ability to critically evaluate LLM outputs rather than accepting them blindly
- Ability to explore and figure things out without perfect instructions
- Proactive communication in collaborative environments
Nice to have
- Python, TypeScript, Node.js
- Twilio or other telephony systems
- LLMs, prompting, or agentic systems
