Role overview
Virlo is hiring a Backend Software Engineer to build and operate the systems that collect, process, search, and deliver short-form video data. You’ll work on product features and API endpoints, improve data freshness and reliability, and troubleshoot production issues caused by large volumes of changing social data.
What you’ll work on
- Backend services to collect and normalize short-form video, account, and engagement data
- Virlo public API: endpoints, authentication, usage limits, error handling, and documentation
- Search & filtering across videos, creators, accounts, keywords, and performance metrics
- Account tracking, outlier detection, exports, and alerting workflows
- Background processing: jobs, queues, retries, and monitoring
- Internal tools for reviewing API activity, customer usage, and data-quality issues
- Customer integrations that use Virlo data within existing products/workflows
- Performance work: query speed, data freshness, failed jobs, and high-volume requests
Responsibilities
- Design, build, test, and maintain backend services and APIs
- Own features end-to-end (technical planning through production release)
- Collaborate with product and customer-facing teams to review requirements
- Investigate bugs reported by customers and internal users
- Write tests for new functionality and recurring failure cases
- Review code and document important technical decisions
- Improve monitoring to detect issues before customers report them
- Speak with selected API customers to understand technical requirements
- Help decide whether to repair/replace/retain existing systems
Requirements
- 3+ years of professional backend or full-stack engineering experience
- Experience building production web applications or developer-facing APIs
- Strong backend language experience (e.g., Python, TypeScript, Go, Java)
- Experience designing REST APIs and working with authentication, pagination, rate limits, and webhooks
- Experience with relational databases and writing efficient queries
- Experience with background jobs/queues, scheduled tasks, or event-driven systems
- Familiarity with automated testing, Git, code review, and CI/CD
- Experience deploying/maintaining on AWS, GCP, or Azure
- Clear written communication and comfort working with limited management layers
Nice-to-haves / relevant experience
- Web scraping, browser automation, or working with unofficial/third-party data sources
- Search systems or working with large datasets
- Social media APIs / frequently changing external platforms
- Data pipelines (ETL) and asynchronous processing
- SaaS or developer tools with usage-based billing
- Experience in small startup teams with direct customer interaction
What success looks like (first 90 days)
- Ship changes to an existing backend service
- Understand how data moves from collection through product/API
- Resolve production bugs without step-by-step direction
- Improve one recurring reliability or performance issue
- Take ownership of a defined product/API workflow
